A Phenomenological Study on the Experience of Group Art Therapy for the Elders with Mild Dementia in the Dementia Center

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the meanings and essence of the experience of the elders with mild dementia who have participated group art therapy operated at the Dementia Center. In addition, this study attempts to find out how group art therapy can help strengthen cognitive ability and psychosocial aspect of the elders with mild dementia. For this, this study applied Giorgi's phenomenological research method, selected seven participants with mild dementia who experienced group art therapy in the Dementia Center as study participants, and collected data through focus group interviews from October 2019 to November 2019. From the results of the data analysis, four components and 10 sub?components were derived. The four components include ¡®Art activities give psychological stability¡¯, 'Structural activities of group art therapy and art works of other group members help cognitive and expressive functions', 'Group art therapy promotes confidence and will of life', and 'Dementia center is a comfortable socializing community and helps to get altruism.' This study confirmed that group art therapy is a meaningful intervention as a program in the Dementia Center by identifying psychosocial meanings that help strengthen the cognitive ability of the elders with mild dementia.
